The Third PEMA Symposium on

“Empowering Young Minds, Building Futures: Investing in Children and Adolescents’ Mental Health and Wellbeing” commenced today in Thimphu. Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen graced the event, delivering the opening address and launching Bhutan’s first National Mental Health Strategy and the Bhutan Reintegration and Value Enhancement (BRAVE) Programme. Keynote speakers including Dasho Dechen Wangmo (PEMA Secretariat), Dr. Catharina Boehme (WHO-SEARO), and Ms. Joana Lai (UNICEF), highlighted the importance of child and adolescent mental health, community-based care, and multi-sectoral action to safeguard young people’s wellbeing.

The day also featured plenary sessions emphasizing early interventions, holistic care, and community support for children. As Her Majesty reminded us, “Our children deserve homes and schools where they feel safe, loved and supported; communities that hear their voices and empower them to thrive; and services that are sensitive to their needs.” The symposium sets the stage for bold action and collaborative efforts to ensure every child in Bhutan thrives. Follow along as we continue to explore, discuss, and take action over the next two days of the symposium!
